Acer platanoides L.

Acer platanoides, commonly known as the Norway maple, is a species of maple native to eastern and central Europe and western Asia, from Spain east to Russia, north to southern Scandinavia and southeast to northern Iran. It was introduced to North America in the mid-1700s as a shade tree. It is a member of the family Sapindaceae.

The population size of Acer platanoides is not known but is assumed to be large and there is no indication of population decline.

Acer platanoides is a large tree species, that can grow to between 25 and 30 m tall. It is a fast growing species, well adapted to a range of growing conditions. It is tolerant of pollution, shade and short droughts but cannot grow on acidic soils. The species is known to grow at any altitude as long as the species has correct precipitation. It occurs in both coniferous and mixed deciduous forests, growing in small groups or as individuals and rarely in pure stands. In temperate continental forests it can co-dominate with other large broadleaved species (Caudullo and de Rigo 2016). Acer palatanoides is used a fodder for many herbivores and invertebrates.

Acer platanoides is highly vulnerable to Anoplophora glabripennis, the Asian Longhorned Beetle (Cuadullo and de Rigo 2016). Infestation by this species can result in the death of mature trees and also increases the risk of mortality from other pests and diseases as the tree becomes stressed.

IUCN: conservation narrative

Acer platanoides is widely cultivated in parks and gardens in Europe (BGCI 2017). It is considered not threatened in Switzerland (Moser et al. 2002) and recently of Least Concern in a regional, European assessment. The species was also previously assessed as Least Concern at the global level (Gibbs et al. 2009). It is recommended the species be monitored for decline as a consequence of the spread of Asian Longhorn Beetle, necessary conservation action should be put in place to prevent the spread of this pest.

The species has a very large extent of occurrence (EOO) and population is assumed to be large and stable. It is also well represented in gardens and tolerant of many different environments. It is also naturalised outside of its native range. Acer platanoides requires monitoring for the impact of the Asian Longhorn Beetle on population across its range.
